So, you are in a store or restaurant and you are asked “do you want to pay in pesos or dollars.” What to do?
First make sure you have a credit card that does not charge any currency exchange fees. These include most premium cards and also Capital One. If you say “dollars” you are at the mercy of whatever exchange rate the merchant feels like using. It will never be as good as your card exchange rate. It may be as much as a 30% swing. So, say “pesos” and then also write “pesos” on the slip to make sure you are not charged dollars.
